Purpose of the guideline: Adolescent scoliosis (AS) is the third most common disease among adolescents nationwide, following myopia and obesity, with a prevalence of approximately 3%. As estimated, there are 3 million adolescent patients in China. Early treatment is mainly based on bracing and exercise therapy, which often fails to control the further development of AS. When the Cobb angle progresses to 45°, complex orthopedic spine surgery with high risks has to be performed for severe AS, which leads to great physical and mental pain, and economic burden. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has unique advantages in the clinical management of AS. The application of TCM spinal manipulation combined with exercise intervention for mild to moderate AS inadequate for surgery can prevent the progression from worsening, reflecting the TCM concept of "superior treat before sick". In addition, standardized TCM treatment for severe AS can help increase spinal flexibility and enhance the orthopedic effect of surgery. The development of the present guideline would guide practitioners to diagnose adolescent scoliosis scientifically and accurately, standardize the treatment methods of spinal manipulation, behavioral interventions and bracing, and establish objective and unified efficacy evaluation criteria. The comprehensive standardized guidelines are of great practical importance to enrich the clinical treatment system of AS and to take advantage of TCM in common orthopedic diseases.
